We respectfully acknowledge Ron's passing on August 29, 2017 after battling lung cancer for two years. It is an honor to include Ron's beautiful work in this exhibition of saké ware, his last show. We would like to thank his twin brother, Russ, for helping Ron select and send the pieces to us. Our deepest sympathies to Ron's wife, Judy, and their loved ones.
Ron Hand's work reflects those intangible qualities that he feels are most important: character, beauty and quietude. His elegant forms are largely influenced by traditional Japanese and Chinese pottery. While his glazes are based on Asian formulas, his clay is dug from swampy areas near where he lives. Hand received his MS in ceramics from the University of Tennessee. His work was included in the exhibition American Shino that traveled to museums in New York and Massachusetts in 2001 and 2002 respectively.
"Through ceramics, I found direction and discovered a purpose for my life, and at last my search was over, my life was no longer lost, but found." -Ron Hand
